HAMBLEDON HILL

A wild and windy place, Hambeldon was a ritual burial site before becoming a battle-worn for in the heartland of ancient Britain.

Hambledon is now the finest example of an Iron Age hillfort, with terrific views across one of the best=preserved prehistoric landscapes in Europe, which was first occupied in about 2850BC.

The fort was eventually deserted in around 300BC. But for 2000 years is was one of the most important settlements in the West Country.

It is now a National Nature Reserve, crammed with rare wild plants and 28 species of butterfly.
